Want to learn foundation paper piecing? Below is a video I created on my YouTube Channel walking you through step-by-step a free pumpkin pattern. Download the free pattern here. After piecing this block, you could make a potholder from it or add it to a table runner or placemat.
Although this FPP block is three different pieces, it really is a beginner block. Foundation Paper piecing is a fun quilting technique. A couple of things to know to make you successful with FPP include:
- Shorten your stitch length to about 1.8 to 2.0
- Use a 90/14 sharp needle to help with paper perforation
- Use paper that is easily perforated such as foundation paper, newsprint, or tear away stabilizer. I do not suggest using copy paper.
An area to save a little money on foundation paper is by using light weight tear away stabilizer. Superpunch 1.5 oz White Tear Away Stabilizer for Embroidery from Amazon could be an option. This option would require you to cut the sheets yourself to fit your printer. I have not had an issue running this through my printer. It can then also be used with an embroidery machine. Also, it works fantastic for creating those fantastic special stitches and fonts with a sewing machine.
I hope you will try foundation paper piecing. I’m sure you will see how useful this technique can be when completing those fun and difficult pieces. Happy quilting!
